bittern
A bittern is a large, secretive bird that belongs to the heron family, known scientifically as the family Ardeidae. These birds are typically found in wetlands, marshes, and reed beds, where they use their excellent camouflage to blend in with their surroundings. Bitterns are known for their distinctive booming calls, especially during the breeding season.
There are several species of bitterns, with the American Bittern and the Eurasian Bittern being among the most recognized. They primarily feed on fish, amphibians, and small invertebrates, using their long necks and sharp beaks to catch prey. Bitterns are generally solitary and are more active during dawn and dusk.
