apple snail
The apple snail is a freshwater mollusk belonging to the family Ampullariidae. Known for its large, round shell, which can vary in color from yellow to brown, it is often found in slow-moving waters like ponds and marshes. Apple snails are herbivorous, feeding primarily on aquatic plants, and play a role in their ecosystems by helping to control plant growth.
These snails are also notable for their ability to breathe air, thanks to a specialized lung-like structure. They reproduce by laying clusters of bright pink eggs above the waterline, which hatch into juvenile snails. Due to their adaptability, some species of apple snails, such as the Pomacea canaliculata, have become invasive in certain regions, impacting local ecosystems.
