Zebra Longwing
The Zebra Longwing is a striking butterfly known for its distinctive black and yellow striped wings. It belongs to the family Nymphalidae and is commonly found in tropical and subtropical regions of the Americas. This butterfly is also notable for its long lifespan, often living several months, which is unusual for butterflies.
Zebra Longwings primarily feed on nectar from flowers, particularly those of the Passiflora genus, which are also their host plants for laying eggs. The larvae, or caterpillars, are green with black spines and feed on the leaves of these plants. This species is also recognized for its social behavior, often seen in groups.
