Zapatistas
The Zapatistas are a revolutionary group based in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas. They emerged in 1994, primarily advocating for the rights of indigenous people and opposing neoliberal economic policies. Their movement gained international attention after a brief armed uprising on January 1, 1994, coinciding with the implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
Led by the charismatic figure known as Subcomandante Marcos, the Zapatistas emphasize grassroots democracy, land reform, and cultural autonomy. They operate through a network of autonomous communities, promoting education and healthcare while resisting government oppression and corporate exploitation. Their struggle continues to inspire social movements worldwide.
