Yellow-shafted Flicker
The Yellow-shafted Flicker is a type of woodpecker found primarily in eastern and northern parts of North America. It is easily recognizable by its distinctive yellow underwing and tail feathers, which are visible in flight. This bird has a brownish body with black spots and a black crescent on its chest, making it a striking sight in its natural habitat.
These flickers are known for their unique feeding habits, often foraging on the ground for ants and beetles. Unlike many other woodpeckers, they frequently feed on the ground rather than just on trees. Their call is a loud, distinctive "wick-a-wick-a-wick," which can be heard during the breeding season.
