Wovoka
Wovoka, also known as Jack Wilson, was a Northern Paiute religious leader born around 1856. He is best known for founding the Ghost Dance movement in the late 19th century, which aimed to restore Native American culture and bring about a time of peace and prosperity. Wovoka claimed to have received a vision during a solar eclipse in 1889, which inspired him to teach a new spiritual practice.
The Ghost Dance involved a ceremonial dance that participants believed would reunite them with their ancestors and bring about the return of the buffalo. Wovoka's teachings spread rapidly among various Native American tribes, leading to both hope and conflict, particularly with the U.S. government, which viewed the movement as a threat.
