World Commission on Environment and Development
The World Commission on Environment and Development (WCED) was established in 1983 by the United Nations to address the growing concerns about environmental degradation and sustainable development. The commission aimed to promote a global agenda that balanced economic growth with environmental protection, leading to the publication of the influential report titled "Our Common Future" in 1987.
The WCED emphasized the concept of sustainable development, which seeks to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This report laid the groundwork for subsequent international agreements and initiatives, including the Earth Summit in 1992 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted in 2015.
