Wojciech Jaruzelski
Wojciech Jaruzelski was a Polish military officer and politician, born on March 6, 1923. He served as the last communist leader of Poland, holding the position of Prime Minister from 1981 to 1985 and President from 1989 to 1990. Jaruzelski is best known for declaring martial law in December 1981 to suppress the Solidarity movement, which sought to promote workers' rights and political reform.
Jaruzelski's actions during this period were controversial, as they aimed to maintain control over the country amid rising social unrest. After the fall of communism in Poland, he transitioned to a more democratic role, participating in the political landscape until his retirement. He passed away on May 25, 2021.
