Windrush scandal
The Windrush scandal refers to a controversy in the United Kingdom that emerged in 2018, involving the wrongful detention, deportation, and denial of legal rights to members of the Windrush generation. This group includes individuals who arrived in the UK from the Caribbean between 1948 and 1971, often invited to help rebuild the country after World War II. Many of these individuals were long-term residents but lacked formal documentation.
The scandal highlighted failures in the UK government's immigration policies, particularly the "hostile environment" strategy aimed at illegal immigration. As a result, many people faced significant hardships, including job loss, homelessness, and separation from family. The government later apologized and established a compensation scheme for those affected.
