William Whitney
William Whitney was an American businessman and politician born on July 9, 1824. He is best known for his role as the Secretary of the Navy under President Grover Cleveland from 1885 to 1889. Whitney played a significant part in modernizing the U.S. Navy during his tenure, advocating for the construction of new ships and improving naval technology.
In addition to his political career, Whitney was a successful financier and a partner in the investment banking firm Whitney & Company. He was also involved in various philanthropic efforts, contributing to education and public welfare initiatives in New York City. Whitney passed away on February 2, 1892.
