William Torrey Harris
William Torrey Harris was an American philosopher, educator, and psychologist born on July 10, 1835. He is best known for his role as the U.S. Commissioner of Education from 1889 to 1906, where he advocated for educational reform and the importance of public schooling. Harris believed in the value of a well-rounded education that included the arts and sciences.
In addition to his work in education, Harris was a prominent figure in the philosophy of idealism and contributed to the American educational system. He also served as the superintendent of schools in St. Louis and was involved in various educational organizations throughout his career. Harris passed away on December 5, 1909.
