Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer
The Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) is a NASA space telescope launched in December 2009. Its primary mission was to survey the entire sky in infrared light, allowing scientists to detect celestial objects that are too faint or cool to be seen in visible light. WISE helped identify asteroids, comets, and distant galaxies, contributing significantly to our understanding of the universe.
WISE operated for over a year, completing its primary mission in 2011. Afterward, it continued to gather data in a mission called NEOWISE, focusing on near-Earth objects like asteroids and comets. The data collected by WISE has been invaluable for astronomers and planetary scientists.
