White Pass and Yukon Route
The White Pass and Yukon Route (WP&YR) is a narrow-gauge railroad that connects the port of Skagway, Alaska, to Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada. Built during the Klondike Gold Rush in the late 1890s, it was essential for transporting goods and miners to the goldfields. The railway features stunning views of mountains, glaciers, and rivers, making it a popular tourist attraction today.
The WP&YR spans approximately 110 miles and includes steep grades and trestle bridges. It was completed in 1900 and played a crucial role in the development of the Yukon region. Today, it operates both freight and passenger services, preserving its historical significance.
