White Adipose Tissue
White Adipose Tissue (WAT) is a type of fat found in the body that primarily stores energy. It consists of large cells called adipocytes, which contain lipid droplets. WAT plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism and maintaining body temperature, as well as providing cushioning and insulation for organs.
In addition to energy storage, WAT also functions as an endocrine organ, releasing hormones like leptin and adiponectin. These hormones help regulate appetite, metabolism, and insulin sensitivity. Excessive accumulation of WAT can lead to health issues, including obesity and related diseases such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
