Wends
The term "Wends" refers to a group of Slavic people who historically inhabited areas in present-day Germany and Poland. They are often associated with the Sorbs, a West Slavic ethnic group, and have a rich cultural heritage that includes unique traditions, language, and folklore. The Wends primarily settled in regions along the Elbe and Oder rivers, where they maintained their distinct identity for centuries.
In the 19th century, the Wends faced significant challenges due to assimilation pressures and the spread of German nationalism. Many Wends began to adopt the German language and customs, leading to a decline in their traditional practices. Today, efforts are being made to preserve Wendish culture and language, particularly in areas where their descendants still reside.
