Wainwrights
A "Wainwright" refers to a person who builds or repairs wagons, traditionally known as wains. This occupation was common in rural areas before the rise of motor vehicles, as wagons were essential for transporting goods and people. The term is derived from the Old English word "wain," meaning wagon.
In the context of hiking, particularly in the Lake District of England, "Wainwrights" also refers to a collection of 214 peaks that were popularized by the author and illustrator Alfred Wainwright. His guidebooks, published in the mid-20th century, have inspired many hikers to explore these mountains, making them a significant part of the region's outdoor culture.
