Volga Germans
The Volga Germans are a group of ethnic Germans who settled along the Volga River in Russia during the 18th century. They were invited by Catherine the Great to populate the region and were promised certain privileges, including autonomy and exemption from military service.
Over time, the Volga Germans developed a distinct culture, maintaining their language and traditions. However, during the early 20th century, many faced discrimination and were forced to relocate, especially during the Stalin era. Today, their descendants can be found in various countries, including the United States and Canada.
