Vladimir Prelog
Vladimir Prelog was a Croatian chemist born on July 23, 1906, in Sarajevo, which was then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He is best known for his work in the field of organic chemistry, particularly in stereochemistry, which studies the spatial arrangement of atoms in molecules. Prelog's research contributed significantly to the understanding of how molecular structures affect chemical reactions.
In 1975, Prelog was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his contributions to the development of the Cahn-Ingold-Prelog priority rules, a system used to determine the configuration of chiral molecules. He spent much of his career at the ETH Zurich, where he influenced many students and researchers in the field of chemistry. Prelog passed away on January 7, 1998.
