Virus Classification
Virus classification is the process of categorizing viruses based on their characteristics, such as structure, genetic material, and replication methods. Viruses are primarily classified into families, genera, and species. The main criteria for classification include whether the virus has DNA or RNA as its genetic material, its shape, and how it infects host cells.
The International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) is responsible for establishing and updating the classification system. This system helps scientists understand the relationships between different viruses and aids in research, vaccine development, and disease control efforts.
