Vincenzo Peruggia
Vincenzo Peruggia was an Italian handyman and painter, best known for stealing the famous painting, the Mona Lisa, from the Louvre Museum in Paris in 1911. He believed that the artwork should be returned to Italy, as he felt it had been wrongfully taken by Napoleon during his rule. Peruggia hid the painting in his apartment for over two years.
In 1913, Peruggia attempted to sell the Mona Lisa to an art dealer in Florence, which led to his arrest. He was tried and convicted, but received a relatively light sentence. The painting was returned to the Louvre, where it remains today.
