Villi
Villi are tiny, finger-like projections found in the lining of the small intestine. They play a crucial role in digestion and nutrient absorption by increasing the surface area available for these processes. Each villus is covered with even smaller hair-like structures called microvilli, which further enhance absorption.
The primary function of villi is to absorb nutrients from digested food into the bloodstream. This allows essential substances, such as vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, to enter the body efficiently. The presence of villi is vital for maintaining proper nutrition and overall health, as they help the body utilize the food consumed.
