Vestibular Function
Vestibular function refers to the sensory system responsible for maintaining balance and spatial orientation. It is primarily located in the inner ear, where structures like the semicircular canals and otolith organs detect head movements and changes in position. This information is then sent to the brain, helping to coordinate balance and eye movements.
The vestibular system works closely with other sensory systems, such as vision and proprioception, to provide a comprehensive understanding of body position. When functioning properly, it allows individuals to perform daily activities without losing balance or experiencing dizziness. Disruptions in vestibular function can lead to balance disorders and vertigo.
