Uyezd
An "Uyezd" is a historical administrative division that was commonly used in the Russian Empire and later in the Soviet Union. It functioned as a district or county, serving as a subunit of a larger region known as a Guberniya. Each uyezd had its own local government and was responsible for various administrative tasks, including tax collection and law enforcement.
The concept of uyezds dates back to the 18th century and played a significant role in the organization of local governance. Over time, many uyezds were reorganized or dissolved, especially during the political changes of the 20th century, leading to the establishment of new administrative divisions in modern Russia.
