Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571
Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 was a chartered flight carrying a rugby team, their friends, and family that crashed in the Andes Mountains on October 13, 1972. The aircraft, a Fairchild FH-227D, encountered severe weather and lost altitude, ultimately crashing in a remote area of the mountains.
Survivors faced extreme conditions, including freezing temperatures and limited food supplies. After several days without rescue, they made the difficult decision to resort to cannibalism, consuming the bodies of deceased passengers. The ordeal lasted 72 days, with only 16 of the 45 passengers ultimately rescued on December 20, 1972.
