Uncompahgre Wilderness
The Uncompahgre Wilderness is a protected area located in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado. Covering approximately 102,000 acres, it features rugged terrain, including high peaks, deep canyons, and alpine lakes. The wilderness is known for its diverse ecosystems, which support a variety of wildlife, including deer, elk, and numerous bird species.
Established in 1980, the Uncompahgre Wilderness is part of the Gunnison National Forest. It offers numerous recreational opportunities, such as hiking, camping, and fishing. The area is also home to the Uncompahgre Peak, one of Colorado's fourteeners, attracting outdoor enthusiasts and climbers.
