Umbilical Cord Prolapse
Umbilical Cord Prolapse occurs when the umbilical cord slips ahead of the presenting part of the fetus during labor. This can happen when the membranes rupture, allowing the cord to fall into the birth canal. It can lead to compression of the cord, which may reduce blood flow and oxygen to the baby, potentially causing distress.
If umbilical cord prolapse is detected, healthcare providers may take immediate action to relieve pressure on the cord. This can include changing the mother's position or, in some cases, performing a cesarean section to ensure the safety of both the mother and the baby.
