USS S-5
The USS S-5 was a United States Navy submarine, part of the S-class, launched on March 1, 1919. It was designed for coastal defense and had a displacement of about 1,000 tons when submerged. The submarine was equipped with four torpedo tubes and could carry a small crew of around 30 men.
The S-5 is notable for its tragic accident in 1920 when it sank during a dive test off the coast of New Jersey. Fortunately, the crew was rescued after spending several hours trapped inside. The submarine was later salvaged and decommissioned in 1922.
