USS Neosho (AO-23) History
The USS Neosho (AO-23) was a fleet oiler of the United States Navy, launched on April 24, 1939. It played a crucial role during World War II, providing fuel and supplies to naval vessels in the Pacific Theater. The ship was named after the Neosho River in Missouri and was commissioned on June 30, 1940.
During the Battle of Coral Sea in May 1942, the USS Neosho was attacked and severely damaged by Japanese aircraft. Despite efforts to save the ship, it was ultimately sunk on May 7, 1942. The loss of the Neosho highlighted the importance of logistics in naval warfare.
