USS Mount Hood (AE-1) History
The USS Mount Hood (AE-1) was a munitions ship of the United States Navy, launched on March 1, 1944. It was named after the famous Mount Hood in Oregon and served primarily during World War II. The ship was designed to transport and supply ammunition to naval forces, playing a crucial role in supporting military operations in the Pacific Theater.
On November 10, 1944, the USS Mount Hood suffered a catastrophic explosion while anchored in Humboldt Bay, New Guinea. The explosion resulted in the loss of 203 crew members and significant damage to nearby vessels. Despite this tragedy, the ship's service contributed to the overall success of the U.S. Navy's efforts during the war.
