USS Indianapolis
The USS Indianapolis was a Portland-class heavy cruiser of the United States Navy, commissioned in 1932. It played a significant role in World War II, notably in the delivery of components for the first atomic bomb to the island of Tinian in July 1945.
On July 30, 1945, the ship was torpedoed by the Japanese submarine I-58 and sank in the Philippine Sea. Of the nearly 1,200 crew members, about 300 went down with the ship, while the remaining survivors faced exposure, shark attacks, and dehydration in the water for several days before rescue.
