USS Fitzgerald
The USS Fitzgerald (DDG-62) is a guided-missile destroyer of the United States Navy, commissioned in 1995. It is part of the Arleigh Burke-class and is designed for various missions, including anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine warfare. The ship is named after Lieutenant William Charles Fitzgerald, a naval officer who served during World War II.
On June 17, 2017, the USS Fitzgerald was involved in a collision with the MV ACX Crystal, a container ship, near Yokosuka, Japan. The incident resulted in the deaths of seven sailors and significant damage to the destroyer. Following the collision, the ship underwent extensive repairs and returned to service in 2020.
