Turkish Shadow Play
Turkish Shadow Play, known as Karagöz, is a traditional form of theater that uses flat, articulated figures made of leather or cardboard. These figures are manipulated behind a translucent screen, with light casting their shadows onto the screen for the audience to see. The performances often include humor, social commentary, and improvisation, making them engaging for viewers.
The art form dates back to the Ottoman Empire and has roots in various cultures, including Chinese Shadow Play. Karagöz characters often represent different social classes and types, such as the clever Karagöz and the pompous Hacivat. This unique storytelling method continues to be celebrated in Turkey today.
