True Whig Party
The True Whig Party was a political party in Liberia that dominated the country's politics from the late 19th century until the late 20th century. Founded in 1869, it primarily represented the interests of the Americo-Liberian elite, descendants of freed American slaves who settled in Liberia. The party focused on maintaining the political power of this group and promoting policies that favored their economic and social status.
Throughout its existence, the True Whig Party faced criticism for its exclusionary practices and failure to address the needs of the indigenous population. Despite this, it maintained a strong grip on power until the Liberian Civil War in the 1980s, which ultimately led to its decline and the end of its political dominance in Liberia.
