Trophic Pyramid
A trophic pyramid is a visual representation of the feeding relationships within an ecosystem. It illustrates how energy and nutrients flow from one level of organisms to another, starting with producers at the base, such as plants and algae, which convert sunlight into energy through photosynthesis. Above them are primary consumers, like herbivores, followed by secondary and tertiary consumers, which include carnivores and omnivores.
Each level of the trophic pyramid typically contains less energy than the one below it, due to energy loss through metabolic processes and heat. This means that there are usually fewer organisms at the top levels, such as top predators, compared to the abundant producers at the base. Understanding the trophic pyramid helps in studying ecosystem dynamics and the impact of changes in species populations.
