Treasure of the Atocha
The Treasure of the Atocha refers to a legendary cache of gold, silver, and precious gems that sank with the Spanish galleon Nuestra Señora de Atocha in 1622. The ship was part of a fleet returning from the New World to Spain when it encountered a hurricane off the coast of Florida, leading to its tragic sinking.
In 1985, treasure hunter Mel Fisher discovered the wreckage near the Florida Keys, uncovering a fortune valued at over $400 million. The treasure included gold coins, silver bars, and emeralds, making it one of the most famous shipwreck discoveries in history.
