Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR)
The Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) is a key safety metric used to measure workplace safety performance. It calculates the number of recordable incidents, such as injuries and illnesses, per 100 full-time employees over a year. This rate helps organizations assess their safety practices and identify areas for improvement.
TRIR is calculated using the formula: (Number of recordable incidents × 200,000) ÷ Total hours worked by all employees. The factor of 200,000 represents the number of hours that 100 employees would work in a year. A lower TRIR indicates a safer work environment, while a higher rate suggests potential safety issues.
