Torrijos-Carter Treaties
The Torrijos-Carter Treaties were signed on September 7, 1977, between the United States and Panama. Named after Panamanian leader Omar Torrijos and U.S. President Jimmy Carter, these treaties aimed to transfer control of the Panama Canal from the U.S. to Panama by the end of 1999.
The treaties consisted of two main agreements: the first established the timeline for the canal's transfer, while the second outlined the rights and responsibilities of both nations regarding the canal's operation. This marked a significant shift in U.S.-Panama relations and was a key moment in Latin American history.
