Tilted Arc
"Tilted Arc" is a public sculpture created by artist Richard Serra in 1981. It consists of a large, curved steel wall that spans 120 feet and stands 12 feet high. The sculpture was installed in Federal Plaza in New York City and was designed to interact with the surrounding space and the movement of people around it.
The artwork sparked significant controversy and debate over its placement and aesthetic. Many viewers found it obstructive and unwelcoming, leading to calls for its removal. In 1989, after a lengthy public discussion, "Tilted Arc" was dismantled and removed from its original location.
