Thomas Welch (Vintner)
Thomas Welch was an American physician and the founder of the Welch's grape juice company. He is best known for his innovative approach to creating non-alcoholic grape juice, which he developed in the late 19th century. Welch aimed to provide a suitable alternative to wine for use in religious ceremonies, particularly for the Communion service in Protestant churches.
In 1869, Welch began pasteurizing grape juice to prevent fermentation, making it safe for consumption by all ages. His efforts led to the establishment of the Welch's brand, which became synonymous with grape juice in the United States and contributed to the popularization of non-alcoholic beverages.
