Theraphosidae
Theraphosidae, commonly known as tarantulas, are a family of large, hairy spiders found mainly in tropical and subtropical regions. They are known for their impressive size, with some species having a leg span of up to 12 inches. Tarantulas are primarily nocturnal hunters, preying on insects and small animals. Despite their intimidating appearance, they are generally not aggressive towards humans.
These spiders have a unique defense mechanism: they can release tiny, irritating hairs from their abdomens to deter predators. Theraphosidae also exhibit interesting behaviors, such as molting, where they shed their exoskeleton to grow. Many people keep tarantulas as pets due to their fascinating characteristics and relatively low maintenance needs.
