The Lightning Field
The Lightning Field is an outdoor installation created by artist Walter De Maria in 1977, located in the remote desert of New Mexico. It consists of 400 stainless steel poles arranged in a grid over an area of one mile by one kilometer. Each pole stands 20 feet tall and is designed to attract lightning, creating a unique visual experience during thunderstorms.
Visitors can stay overnight in a nearby cabin to fully appreciate the installation. The artwork is intended to engage with the natural environment, emphasizing the relationship between art, nature, and the passage of time.
