The Equal Justice Initiative
The Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) is a nonprofit organization based in Montgomery, Alabama, founded by lawyer Bryan Stevenson in 1989. Its mission is to provide legal representation to individuals who have been unfairly treated in the criminal justice system, particularly those on death row and those facing harsh sentences. EJI also works to challenge systemic issues such as racial discrimination and mass incarceration.
In addition to legal advocacy, the EJI engages in public education and outreach efforts. The organization has created the Legacy Museum and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice to raise awareness about the history of racial injustice in the United States. Through these initiatives, EJI aims to promote understanding and foster change in society.
