Texas Western Miners
The Texas Western Miners, now known as the UTEP Miners, are the athletic teams representing the University of Texas at El Paso. Founded in 1914, the Miners compete in various sports, including basketball, football, and track and field, as part of the Conference USA.
The most notable achievement of the Texas Western Miners came in 1966 when their men's basketball team won the NCAA championship. This victory was historic as they became the first team with an all-Black starting lineup to win the title, defeating the Kentucky Wildcats in the final game.
