Terry Sanford
Terry Sanford was an American politician and educator, born on August 20, 1917, in Laurinburg, North Carolina. He served as the 63rd Governor of North Carolina from 1961 to 1965 and was known for his progressive policies, particularly in education and civil rights. Sanford also played a significant role in the establishment of the North Carolina School of the Arts.
After his governorship, Sanford became the president of Duke University from 1969 to 1985, where he focused on expanding the university's programs and facilities. He was a prominent figure in the Democratic Party and ran for the U.S. Senate in 1986 but was unsuccessful. Sanford passed away on April 18, 1998.
