Territorial Sea
The Territorial Sea is a maritime zone extending up to 12 nautical miles from a country's coastline. Within this area, the coastal state has sovereignty, meaning it can enforce laws, regulate resources, and control navigation. This zone is recognized under international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
Beyond the Territorial Sea lies the Contiguous Zone, which extends an additional 12 nautical miles. In this area, a state can enforce laws related to customs, immigration, and pollution. The concept of the Territorial Sea helps balance the rights of coastal nations with the freedom of navigation for all states.
