Termite Colonies
A termite colony is a structured community of termites that live together, typically consisting of three main castes: workers, soldiers, and reproductives. The workers are responsible for foraging for food, building and maintaining the nest, and caring for the young. Soldiers protect the colony from predators, while reproductives, including the queen and king, are responsible for reproduction.
Termite colonies can vary in size, with some containing thousands to millions of individuals. They build intricate nests, often underground or within wood, and can significantly impact their environment by breaking down cellulose in plant material, contributing to nutrient cycling in ecosystems.
