Ten-Codes
"Ten-Codes," also known as "10-codes" or "ten signals," are brevity codes used in voice communication, particularly by law enforcement and emergency services. These codes help convey information quickly and clearly over radio transmissions, reducing the chance of miscommunication. Each code typically begins with the number ten, followed by a specific number that represents a particular message or status.
For example, 10-4 means "acknowledged" or "understood," while 10-20 refers to a location. Although widely used, some agencies have moved away from ten-codes in favor of plain language to enhance clarity, especially in multi-agency communications during emergencies.
