A tapeworm is a type of parasitic flatworm that lives in the intestines of various animals, including humans. They belong to the class Cestoda and can grow to significant lengths, sometimes reaching several meters. Tapeworms attach themselves to the intestinal wall using specialized structures called scolex.
Tapeworms are typically transmitted through the consumption of undercooked or contaminated food, particularly meat or fish. Once ingested, they can reproduce and release eggs, which may lead to further infections. Symptoms of a tapeworm infection can include abdominal pain, weight loss, and digestive issues, but some individuals may remain asymptomatic.
