Synod of Dort
The Synod of Dort was a significant assembly held from 1618 to 1619 in the city of Dordrecht, in the Netherlands. It was convened by the Dutch Reformed Church to address theological disputes arising from the teachings of Jacob Arminius and his followers, known as the Arminians. The synod aimed to clarify issues related to predestination and grace, ultimately affirming the doctrines of Calvinism.
The synod produced the Canons of Dort, a set of doctrinal statements that outlined the Reformed perspective on salvation. It rejected the Arminian views and reinforced the five points of Calvinism, often summarized by the acronym TULIP. The decisions made at the Synod of Dort had a lasting impact on Reformed theology and church governance.
