Syiem
A Syiem is a traditional chief or leader in the Khasi tribe of Meghalaya, India. This position is significant in the local governance system, where the Syiem oversees the administration of the village and its people. The Syiem is responsible for maintaining law and order, resolving disputes, and upholding the customs and traditions of the Khasi community.
The role of the Syiem is often hereditary, passed down through generations within a specific family. The Syiem works alongside a council of elders, known as the Dorbar, to make decisions that affect the community. This system reflects the rich cultural heritage of the Khasi people and their emphasis on collective governance.
